My great aunt, a nun, got her masters in Chemistry around 1960. She told me that she was at some conference with several hundred other chemistry grad students and there were only handful of women, all of whom were nuns.
She wasn’t particularly interested in chemistry but after Sputnik the Catholic Church sent a lot of nuns to get grad degrees in STEM so they could give children a technical education.
