Ubuntu Causes Girl To Drop Out Of College (2009)
- fnordpiglet 4y agoLinux caused me to drop out of college and launch a profitable career.
- UncleEntity 4y agoSo… The only issue is she can’t get online because the CD Verizon sent her doesn’t work (which is probably a good thing) and the Dell support person said the same thing as the school which was “no problem”.
- type0 4y agoLooks like they managed to help her, but at that time 08-09 she would probably face more problems at school because she used OpenOffice. A friend of mine couldn't submit her classwork at University because teachers deemed OO generated doc files to be incompatible.
- aaaaaaaaata 4y agoYes, one of the larger (and only) issues at the time was setting OpenOffice to Save as Microsoft formats by default.
- type0 4y agoReally good depiction on the dangers of the Free Software /s
- 4gotunameagain 4y agoIt is a true mystery who funded that story..
- 2OEH8eoCRo0 4y agoRed Hat? Apple?
- aaaaaaaaata 4y agoJust a misguided local reporter. Spoke to him at the time. There was a followup story, too.
- 5350-uiop-1130 4y ago> "I tried to get on the Internet on it, and that did not work" yeah, driver support ~2009 sucked. > "Extremely frustrated, I'm sick of it. can relate.
- Kuinox 4y agoInstalled ubuntu a few weeks ago, IPv4 is broken out of the box, need to summon the DHCP client manually on boot so it get an IPv4.
- jraph 4y agoThat's not normal, Internet access works well out of the box on Ubuntu for almost everybody and has been for years. It could not be one of the most popular Linux distributions otherwise. There is something wrong or weird with your setup. Maybe remove your connection from the settings and set it up again. I've installed Ubuntu on many computers without invoking any weird tricks, I can assure you IPv4 is not broken out of the box. That would be a huge, critical priority mess up. Now, maybe you have some driver issue or something.
- Kuinox 4y agoI'm not saying that normal, but I never had a smooth experience with linux distributions. There was always some kind of problem like that. Always.
