This raises an excellent point - I know that in work and life situations I routinely run through simplified estimates in my head maths before I follow up with details analysis - the quick mental review usually being sufficient to either support or not support a forward step in an operation, I have known many superb managers and company leaders acknowledge the value in such methods and a quick look in details can save millions from what can appear to be a snap decision! It works and I’ve been involved in many similar decisions - I’ve also seen such raised questions from “guesstimates” dismissed resulting in huge lost time and revenue. I’m not too sure where this distrust in clear thinking originated but I have noticed that it is mostly larger / wealthier companies that trust the slow detailed analysis over the smart thinking of their staff - but sometimes that can be a I’d approach - depends on your budget perhaps!
