Ask HN: Math and Theoretical CS Journals/Periodicals for High School Students?
Are there any journals/periodicals in math and theoretical computer science where high school students can publish their work?
My son who has entered grade-11, has gotten deeply fascinated and involved in math and theoretical computer science, spanning areas like number theory, math of cryptography, galois field theory, and category theory after attending some well recognized math camps over the last 2 years.
He thinks there are some alternative interesting proofs for some of the theorems he's worked on. They're not new things that can be published in regular math journals, but just other ways of proving known stuff. Is there a math/cs focused publication that might encourage such articles?
Thank you!
- ColinWright 4y agoMy short answer is that I don't know of any. What would be useful to know is more about these "alternate proofs". There is real and genuine value in having more than one proof of a theorem, especially if it takes a different approach, or has a different "flavour". However, it's impossible to tell without seeing more. It's unlikely that I would be able to assess his work in any meaningful way, but the first step would be to get people to skim and comment,so it would need to be available somewhere on-line. It would also be helpful if you had information in your profile as to how one might contact you.
- msravi 4y agoThank you very much! Link to the "alternate proof" is here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IEe81c4UF10abSRpV0SUVKVbrgk3lcbZ/view https://drive.google.com/file/d/1IEe81c4UF10abSRpV0SUVKVbrgk... Will also have him email you the link, in case you don't check back here. Have also updated the contact in my profile. Sorry about that!
- ColinWright 4y agoNot a problem about the contact info. I've received the email(s) and will reply shortly. I'll also see if I can find some people with the right knowledge to ask about it. Some of them might lurk here, of course, but I'll try elsewhere. It may take a while ... people are generally busy, and it can take a while to get them to look at something outside their immediate concerns.
- msravi 4y agoThank you, once again! Really means a lot.
- Dracophoenix 4y agoI can't speak for Theoretical CS, but there is one Math and Physics journal that I know of that specifically publishes high school students: KöMaL https://www.komal.hu/home.e.shtml https://www.komal.hu/home.e.shtml https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Középiskolai_Matematikai_és_Fizikai_Lapok https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Középiskolai_Matematikai_és_Fi... They publish in English and Hungarian. And, of course, there are no requirements regarding age or institution to publish on https://www.arxiv.org https://www.arxiv.org
