One thing that changed was just scale. Many visual representations of information are great, up until a certain complexity, and then people can't tell what they're looking at. A coworker demoed some Rational product to us back in the day. It was very impressive, creating class diagrams from existing code. It was also an incomprehensible mess of nodes and edges.
