It's still here, just no longer profitable. Frameworks are needed for web apps, especially single page applications (SPAs), if you just want to build traditional page/document based sites the traditional methods work just fine. However SPAs is where the money's at for developers, so developers tend to abuse it due to resume-driven development (RDD) in order to get themselves into better paying positions/companies. That's why tutorials and articles are all about frameworks now, just follow the money.
