- klyrs 4y agoIt's always been a curiosity for me. We trace our lineage back to a time before "mathematics" was differentiated from physics, chemistry, etc (inasmuch that my eldest ancestors were natural scientists who needed math to get the job done). Computer Science itself was begat from the loins of Mathematics. Yet we have our genealogy site, which caters to the purest among us, though we're all mudbloods.

- azepoi 4y agoSome subgraphs are really incredibly rich. Euler advised Lagrange. D'Alembert advised Laplace. Lagrange & Laplace both advised Poisson & Fourier. Poisson & Fourier advised Dirichlet. Poisson & Cauchy advised Ostrogradsky. Poisson also advised Liouville and Chasles. Chasles->Darboux->Borel->Valiron-> Laurent Schwarz Also Chasles->Darboux->Picard-> Hadamard & Weil & Julia Hadamard -> Fréchet & Lévy -> Mandelbrot Isaac Newton, Weierstraß or Gauß are good starting points too
- brutusborn 4y agoReminds me of the way Japanese martisl arts masters and Zen masters sanction their students to teach. This (theoretically) results in unbroken lineages that ensure that all "Masters" skills have been verified in certain ways. I dream of a similar system being used in other expert subjects. A mentor/mentee work together for a long time until the mentee gets the blessing. It would be good for things like rollercoaster building, where an exam may be too difficult to design to cover all levels of understanding required, and the knowledge is held by a few "old timers."
