his slip up evoked wide spread laughter.
"The decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq. I mean of Ukraine."
One invasion is funny the other is tragic. One is heavily criticized while the other is glorified. One's horrors is broadcast 24x7 while other is spoken in hushed tones.
One had authentic torture chambers, kids in prison, detention without trial. The other is accused of having it.
Talking about one will involve "whataboutism".
- mindslight 4y agoEach one hes been characterized as both of the things you've listed, because with 8 billion people on the planet you can find many people who have any opinion you'd like. Empires invading other countries is a bad thing, period. You seem to be implying hypocrisy when the actual difference between the two is perspective. For the invasion of Iraq, the dominant US/western media sold it to the American public as a good thing. For the invasion of Ukraine, the Russian media sells it to the Russian public as a good thing. Two decades later, a majority of Americans have woken up with a hangover and are able to finally say "golly gee maybe those wars and subsequent occupations weren't such a great idea". Two decades from now, Russians will do the same. Probably sooner, with the way their war is going. And please spare us the utter disingenuous bullshit trying to create ambiguity about the techniques the Russian army is using. The only reason Russia might not have torture "chambers" is because they raze entire cities before they arrive. So they torture in ruins. As an American, I've been strongly anti-US-empire my whole adult life. Intellectually, I understood the stories from my family who escaped the Soviets in the aftermath of WWII and came to the US, but didn't particularly identify as I saw the US economic empire as the presently inescapable power structure. Seeing horrific destruction Russia has done to Ukraine, in 2022, under some regressive nonsense of Make Russia Great Again has completely upended my perspective. Nobody wants to live (die) under Russian née Soviet totalitarianism.
- namlem 4y agoWho thinks the invasion of Iraq is funny or glorified? It is almost universally seen as appalling in the US today.
