The Immortal Awfulness of Open Plan Workplaces
- WantonQuantum 4y agoTotally agree with everything in this article. In my company, this awfulness has been amplified by our response to covid-19. Many more people are working from home and so all meetings are now conducted online (teams in our case). This makes every aspect worse. A meeting that might have been held in a meeting room is now several people on the floor talking loudly with headphones on. People keep their headphones on to block out this noise so incidental contact is severely constrained - I can't tell if someone is in a meeting so I don't want to interrupt them to say hello. I had a one-on-one meeting with my boss this week and we held it over teams. I didn't realise until after the meeting that we were both in the office and could have had a normal meeting. People with families are loving the working from home option and so the floor is only about 1/3 occupied, which makes it feel weird.
