What are European countries doing to tackle energy bills?
- mytailorisrich 4y agoIt's unnerving that the current situation in Europe seems to be spun as beyond our control and used to push an agenda when, IMHO it is wholly self-inflicted. Germany decided to exit nuclear and actually mostly replaced it with Russian gas, and now they have cut themselves off of Russian gas without alternatives in place... The UK has has had no coherent national energy policy to speak of for decades beyond a dogmatic "the market will sort itself out". The country has the potential to be near self-sufficient in gas, it has big wind power potential. Government repeatedly refused to fund new nuclear power plant using public money but now the subsidies the new government is expected to announce could have funded 6 nuclear power plants... The list goes on. The current situation was entirely avoidable, and no, we don't have to turn everything off and ration energy from now on "for the environment". We can note than, in the meantime, the US have become of net energy exporter and are actually the largest gas exporter in the world, and are racking it in at the moment.
