One point regarding slots on a motherboard though is space. There is only so much 2D space on a board. When adding in M.2 slots the PCIe slots immediately took a hit. For me, I like the M.2 slot on the back of the board. I'd like it more if it were a standard so case makers can assure access. Also, I understand it might be a bit fragile but is there any reason why M.2 slots can't stick straight up and out of the motherboard? Maybe with some support around whatever you plugin. Sticking straight up and out would provide all around cooling for the stick of whatever AND save motherboard 2D space.
