I'm trying to do the same myself. I've identified big things we need to be looking at and lots of low hanging fruit that will help out a lot. I take on projects I want and try to avoid the kind of work that is less interesting to me, or areas where the company is already strong. It isn't always easy, but as you get more valuable and knowledgeable, you often get more leeway.
