For audio you often get a ton of electronic noise on a PCIe card that isn’t present with an external device. Even the few PCIe still around use breakout boxes.

  The real awakening for audiophiles was when someone bench marked a lot of devices and found the $10 Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter was outperforming these expensive boxes and PCI cards.
