American workers need lots and lots of robots
- JoeAltmaier 4y agoAnother anthem to the 'everybody has to work all their life or something is wrong' theme. The 'everybody has a job' nonsense ignore the slide from professional to service industry, where the former office manager or technical editor is now slinging burgers. But hey! It's a job, the employment statistics make armchair economists comfortable, so all's right with the world I guess. In the 1950's folks wrote about how automation was going to lift the burden of labor from our shoulders, so we could lead better lives. Now that it's happening I hear nothing but panic and denial. "We have to get everybody back to slaving away! Or the economy will collapse!"

The funny thing about these (counter) arguments (to the above) is that despite all of their blabbering is that this will just happen anyway. Companies will make the investments that they deem justified (in robots, for example) and everything will (eventually) adjust to whatever that specific reality brings (e.g. birth rates, re-education, taxes, etc, etc). Most of what anyone ever hears is generally governed by who's trying to win the next election.
