Best way I found to keep peoples attention in presentations is to make obviously shitty slides in mspaint or some other basic painting program, then just use a image viewer in fullscreen mode. I think people have been so desensitised by all the "beautiful" presentations that when you put on something contrasting that, people can't help to pay more attention. Obviously doesn't work in all contexts, like if you represent a enterprise and doing a presentation for a client. But if you try it in internal presentations, I'm sure you'll be surprised by the good reactions to it.
