I can’t wait for the follow up article Things Programmers Believe About VINs.
I’ve worked in the automotive industry for over a decade, and learned that manufactures have messed up and produced vehicles with vins that don’t checksum. That sometimes you will come across vehicles with a VIN that were produced before things were standardized. Recently I needed to deal with a Model T Ford and any system that tried to be too smart about VIN ended up being a struggle to make work.
I’ve also seen titles and insurance with matching entry errors and we actually need to use the “bad” VIN to transact
Yes you should use the checksum to help detect entry errors, but do not require the VIN actually passes.
