Initially I thought that this prompt couldn't really go anywhere, at least not without getting stuck in some clichéd trope, but having come back to it, I think there is scope to make an interesting story along these lines.
So, spoiler alert: It turns out that in a parallel universe, the atomic bomb never got developed during WW2 (or later), but instead the Nazis managed to find some pagan/alien technology in the Arctic[0] which ultimately derived from a UFO that crashed there thousands of years ago. In this parallel universe, the military college was trying to create a portal to our dimension (since they detected the signatures of our nuclear weapon detonations), while also working on radical life extension/invulnerability, since they knew that the crashed aliens had managed to live for a 1000 years, along with some of their human followers/slaves.
Simultaneously, a group of underground scientists in this parallel universe had been working on quantum messaging and wanted to stop these parallel Nazis from succeeding. Long story short, a portal gets opened and millions of zombie Nazis swarm out with alien rayguns, but the brave NSA cryptographers manage to crack the code just in time to create some sort of quantum bomb that destroys just the Nazis and closes the portal, while also destroying parallel Berlin.
