If 10% of Hacker News believes one thing and 10% believes the other--and even with 80% hating the topic entirely and refusing to participate--you will get weird juxtapositions of stories on either side hitting and holding the front page. You aren't even guaranteed to get a mix of comments, because the kind of people who show up to talk about one issue and the kind of people who show up to talk about another issue might have less overlap than you would expect from being on the same website.
