at the end of the day the webkit and firefox teams are going to control where it goes. I don't think this is entirely true. IE still has more than enough marketshare to matter. Microsoft embracing some approach, be it a new language, or be it evolving JavaScript, has influences in how likely the efforts of the other teams are to succeed in the marketplace.
