I was taught that if I didn't know a word, to look it up in the glossary, which all elementary readers had, or if none, in a dictionary. Neither word "glossary" nor "dictionary" appear in this article. Seemed to work well -- I'm told I had taught myself to read, bootstrapped you might say, by the age of two or three.
