Yes I walked around with a 640x480 monocular display tethered to a compactflash card in my toshibia e750 pda with usb host controller, around 20 years ago.
Of course I didn't do desktop work with it, but I looked up offline wikipedia entries (in tr3/tomeraider3 format), read books, watched slideshows and played interactive fiction.
I could do that lying on my bed or sitting in public transport. The only problem was that when I was walking I noticed that I was walking in a sinus wave. I never noticed that as I never had something to read so close attached to my eyes . The problem with this is that my right eye clear real world vision merged with the left eye 640x480 display vision creating an transparency effect on the virtual window. So in essence when I was moving I struggled to read the sentences on a moving background. If it was sideways it would be less of a problem, but it was up and down. Obviously you don't have that problem on a bike, but then it could be dangerous. But sitting and worknig should be ok, it would just take a little bit getting used to, but I guess it would a bit be less ideal then a fixed in space desktop like with the Oculus or Hololens.
For brightness, I used it in broad daylight, I could still see the virtual screen brightly.
Some time later I did the same with a eMagin800 HMD which had a 800x600 screen for the left and a 800x600 for the right. I used that for winamp stereoscopic visualisation. So for these types of applications it's for sure great.
