AI won an art contest, and artists are furious
- superchroma 4y agoPrompting an AI to make a picture seems comparable to paying another artist to make a picture for you with prompts, and I would personally consider that situation similarly ethically unacceptable for submission to competitions. There's a sucky debate here to be had which is the same debate about originality in songs made of samples from other songs, and I guess we'd probably end up at "I'll know originality when I see it", but this to me underscores the importance of watermarking/fingerprinting generated works. I guess that that ship has sailed, however. Worse for me is the fact that he did not clearly disclose the fact that the piece was generated to the judge at submission time. Maybe digital art competitions are over.
- hirundo 4y agoI wouldn't want to enter a weight-lifting contest against a forklift. But I think that issue here is subsidiary. The real one is that the contest reveals that we are witnessing the invention of a forklift. It is making the stevedores understandably nervous.
- superchroma 4y agoI feel a bit sad we invented such a versatile forklift for digital art before any other fields.
