You say that like the aim of the update was just to slow down those older phones (mainly iPhone 6). The problem was that the battery design of the iPhone 6 had a problem when it got old and could no longer provide enough power to run the SOC at full speed without sudden shutdowns. The patch slowed the SOC down enough that the battery could still provide a steady supply of power.
- fezfight 4y agoIt was the point. It was planned obsolescence. They lost or settled several lawsuits about it.
- labcomputer 4y agoIt obviously wasn’t, and it’s disingenuous to argue otherwise. Those phones had “mysterious” shutdown issues with ~20% battery remaining that started being reported about 6 months after release (when it was still the latest iPhone). Those same issues were somehow fixed with a software update, but not before the shutdowns made a bunch of customers angry. It’s obvious that Apple simply under-specced the batteries, not that they were trying to make the phone wear out early.
- fezfight 4y agoIt's not disingenuous to report what the lawsuits (plural!) were about. The lawsuits that were settled and/or lost by Apple. It was planned obsolescence. You can live in denial if you want, but Apple engages in planned obsolescence.
- Tagbert 4y agothere was nothing in those judgements that showed that Apple’s goal was planned obsolescence. At best they showed that that was the effect of the original design shortcoming and the patch to address it.
- fezfight 4y agoApples goal of planned obsolescence is self evident. The settled lawsuits confirm it to those with open eyes. Further, the wikipedia page for planned obsolescence (read the defintion they have, it screams Apple) references the Apple battery lawsuits in 'see also'. That should be enough I think? Included in that list are quite a few other bad practices that Apple engages in! Kinda fun to read the list with Apple in mind. Vendor lock in, right to repair, crippleware (battery software degredation), phobeus cartel (5 years of computer life down from infinite), and more! Its almost just a list of shitty stuff Apple (and other modern phone companies) do. Wow, theyre bad sports. Denial doesn't get us anything but shitty quality phones by shitty companies.
