Until reading the replies in this topic, I had no idea that gambling was still so controversial in the USA. From outside the country, the media portrayal makes it seem like it is broadly accepted. Is it religious morality issue? Telling people they cannot play with their money seems awfully paternalistic for a country whose image revolves around personal liberties.
- syntheweave 4y agoThroughout most of the US, if you turn on the radio and flick through the stations, you will hear evangelical Christian messaging. The two faces of the country are religious Puritans and scheming confidence men. In gambling, you can find combinations of both(church lottery) and also negations(atheists against gambling). But the most common norm would be to gamble in secret and keep quiet about it for the sake of appearances.
