Brendan O'Leary: is Ireland ready for a ‘Yes’ result in a United Ireland poll?
- cardiffspaceman 4y agoThis doesn't open a specific document or stream, just a web site with a bunch of links.
- thomassmith65 4y agoNot sure what happened. I could swear the link I originally posted contained the full URL: https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-yes-result-YTU3YmQ0ODdlNjAwNzYxMjdkZjkwNjM3YWU2YWIwNjg= https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-... If that doesn't work outside my geo, maybe this will take you to the correct URL: https://www.todayfm.com/podcasts/the-last-word-with-matt-cooper/are-we-prepared-for-a-yes-result-in-a-united-ireland-poll https://www.todayfm.com/podcasts/the-last-word-with-matt-coo...
- thomassmith65 4y ago@dang Could you fix the URL for my post? It should be https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-yes-result-YTU3YmQ0ODdlNjAwNzYxMjdkZjkwNjM3YWU2YWIwNjg= https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-... Despite the annoying commercial radio stinger that kicks off this interview, the interview itself is an exceptionally good and succinct explanation of the current Irish situation.
- kfarr 4y agoBrexit is a self own of epic proportions. With potential for Ireland to reunite and Scotland to go independent. Thanks for sharing
- Kaibeezy 4y agoConfirming this URL works. I sometimes feel guilty about watching the UK stumble with mortal wounds like this, as if it’s some grotesque medieval entertainment. Starmer should unwind the pear of anguish and say he’ll investigate reversing Brexit.
- dfawcus 4y agoBrexit can not be "reversed", any politician claiming such is lying. The most that can happen is that we apply to rejoin, but as a new applicant, we'd have to accept the full set of stuff, with no opt outs. That even assumes the existing members would even accept us again as a member, which given how the relationship has been going seems unlikely.
- jahnu 4y agoAgree. And not only that, there is little appetite amongst a large proportion of English voters to join again anyway. Even among those who feel it went badly and they wish they voted otherwise in hindsight. I highly recommend this speech given by Fintan O’Toole describing his hypothesis on what’s going on in the UK and specifically England and how it results in things like Brexit https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1SeadvWsn_k https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1SeadvWsn_k
- Beltalowda 4y ago> Starmer should unwind the pear of anguish and say he’ll investigate reversing Brexit. Only so they can leave again in a few years? People who voted Brexit didn't just disappear, and the broad EU-scepticism that was always present certainly didn't. You can't force these things through; maybe in 20 or 30 years if (emphasis on if) a broad consensus has been reached: sure. But now? It would be pretty ridiculous. Lots of things about Brexit could have been handled better, but it's a done deal at this point. It's also important to distinguish between Brexit as a concept and the bumbling of May and especially Johnson governments. NI was always going to be a difficult point, and "that agreement we had about NI? We decided that it's not good after all and we will unilaterally cancel it even though we signed it ourselves, kthxfuckitybye" has nothing to do with Brexit as a concept, and everything to do with the government. Pumping sewage in the sea? Again, not a Brexit problem – a UK governance problem. etc. These are the real problems that should be fixed by any new government (among many others). In my opinion Brexit has always primarily been about dissatisfaction with the British government and politics, rather than the EU. British politicians have long had a tendency to blame the EU for their own policy failings, and one of the reasons I was low-key in favour of Brexit is that the ability to (often inaccurately) deflect criticism towards the EU would be taken away. It remains to be seen whether that will happen (another was that it was always an unhappy and strained relationship, and that the EU would be better off without the UK).
- dang 4y agoFixed now. It's because https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-yes-result-YTU3YmQ0ODdlNjAwNzYxMjdkZjkwNjM3YWU2YWIwNjg= https://www.goloudplayer.com/episodes/are-we-prepared-for-a-... points to https://www.goloudplayer.com/ https://www.goloudplayer.com/ as its canonical URL, and our software uses canonical URLs when it finds them. We should probably not do this when the canonical URL is just the base domain, since that seems to be most of the bugs with this behavior.
- thomassmith65 4y agoThanks for the fix and explanation.
- TazeTSchnitzel 4y agoThis is such a horrible audio player. I can't pause, only stop and restart? I can't see the remaining time? I can't skip backwards or forwards? The topic would be interesting to me but I can't stomach this, it's too painful. I can't know that I won't be interrupted and forced to restart to hear what I missed.
- debesyla 4y agoPress the X at the right side of the screen, the "drawer" with info closes down then and timeline shows up.
- TazeTSchnitzel 4y agoOh, I see. That's very unintuitive, I had expected it would close the episode entirely.
- jahnu 4y agoYou can find the episode on the usual podcast mobile apps if that helps? Very high quality discussion it is too and not overly long at 18 mins
- Asraelite 4y agoHere's the direct download: https://bauernordic-pods.sharp-stream.com/ie/2791/brendan_o_leary_02092022_a57bd487_normal.mp3 https://bauernordic-pods.sharp-stream.com/ie/2791/brendan_o_... I hope it's not a temporary URL. It that doesn't work, you can also get it by going to the Network tab of your brower's dev tools and filtering for media.
- TazeTSchnitzel 4y agoThank you! I can paste that into VLC's "open network stream" dialogue and now I have a decent way to listen to it. :)
- I_complete_me 4y agoThere is an extended interview with Prof. O'Leary on this topic at https://www.irishtimes.com/podcasts/inside-politics/making-sense-of-a-united-ireland/ https://www.irishtimes.com/podcasts/inside-politics/making-s....
- thomassmith65 4y agoThanks, I checked it out, and it's also terrific listening. It even explores what to adopt as national anthem, a concern I'd never considered.
