Netflix’s historic introduction of levels for software engineering
- JoeAltmaier 4y agoAn interesting effort by Netflix to manage a complex social space - the pecking order (and pay) of Engineers. This stuff makes me glad I'm a contractor. I name a price; they pay it or not. End of relationship.
- tssva 4y agoJob levels and titles are fun. At my current company internally I'm a System Architect 7 (what my compensation is supposed to be but really isn't based upon), Vice President and Chief Engineer (the role I'm currently filling). Externally I have several titles depending upon the customer or business partner I'm dealing with. Some customers I only talk to a couple of times a year and have to refresh myself as to what to introduce myself as since my title on their project is contractually defined. The person I report to in my role of Chief Engineer has a VP job title but internally is a Senior Director and as such reports to me for some internal company stuff. To make it even more entertaining I have never been a system architect or really an engineer even of the software kind (I've never written a line of code professionally). Until my current Chief Engineer title, the only other title with engineer I ever had was Internet Engineer III when I worked in the network backbone planning and design group of a large international ISP about 24 years ago.
