IMO the only thing holding back "edge" devices are the minimally sufficient network interfaces.
Except for a couple of Mini-ITX based solutions, It's dang near impossible to get anything with >1gbe in any kind of SFF.
Please will someone start building 1L form factor with dual 1/2.5/5/10gbe already?
- faeriechangling 4y agoReally? I’ve seen everything from Mac minis to NUCs to SBCs adopt >1gbps interfaces. Everything is starting to fall into place for 2.5gbps, we are going to eventually throttle WAP bandwidth, disk is faster than 1gbps now that we’ve moved to NVMe, WAN connections >1gbps are increasingly widespread, 2.5gbps gear is getting inexpensive, we can run the bandwidth on copper. The availability of these units has been awful with the chip shortage but they are seeing pretty substantial production in my estimation.
- jeffbee 4y agoYeah the NUC 11 and 12 come with 2.5gbe. 10gbe is still an expensive option for most. Thunderbolt fills the niche for some, since it can form point-to-point networks at respectable speeds, > 10gbps without much hassle.
