For those wondering, this is not a final decision.
The case will now go to the NLRB board, and then the courts of appeal. The local administrative law judge (in-house NLRB court) is only the first stage.
I would not expect the NLRB to rule for Amazon at the board level, either. The first chance of a friendly court will be at the circuit level.
- Animats 4y agoAmazon isn't even supposed to have a voice in this. The right to organize belongs solely to the workers. Amazon is raising phony claims that somehow, the election wasn't fair to them. Those were rejected.
- seibelj 4y agoAnd whenever the union loses, they say the election wasn't fair to them. It's almost like both sides refuse to believe anyone can have an opposing opinion and everything is rigged
- unethical_ban 4y agoYour comment ignores that one side is a trillion dollar company with a track record of abuse and anti union behavior, documented as fact.
- googlryas 4y agoYou could just say "Your comment ignores...". I don't see much of a problem with seibelj's comment, it seems accurate. Just like in American politics, people constantly decry "That's unconstitutional!" about some proposed law they don't like, as if there is any kind of agreed upon definition of what is unconstitutional(there isn't - even the Supreme Court frequently disagrees within itself and is only decided based on a simple majority-rules voting of the members).
- unethical_ban 4y agoQuite a useless tangent. I don't see how the bad comparison of power between union and Amazon compares with constitutional philosophy.
- seibelj 4y agoAnd major unions such as the UAW have embezzled millions of dollars from their members, documented as fact https://www.justice.gov/usao-edmi/pr/former-uaw-official-sentenced-57-months-prison-embezzling-over-2-million-union-funds https://www.justice.gov/usao-edmi/pr/former-uaw-official-sen... Let’s not pretend one side is sinners and one is saints
- csb6 4y agoThe UAW didn’t organize this election. Neither did any major unions. An independent union, the Amazon Labor Union, did. Stop implying that major unions have anything to do with the dispute.
- seibelj 4y agoMy comment is to counteract the knee-jerk HN opinion that "All unions are a panacea!" without ignoring the very real, very well-documented counterpoints.
- unethical_ban 4y agoUnions are better than trillion dollar corporations by default, full stop. The worker gets more benefit of the doubt than the owner, full stop. Show me the malfeasance of the particular union organizing activity, or else I believe the workers by default.
