TikTok developed the whole contemporary mobile video style in concert with its users and it’s algorithm. I don’t think you can just copy the features and throw them at a different audience and expect things to work out. I don’t think chasing the current hot thing is necessarily a terrible idea but I think pivoting your app constantly to chase the hot thing is. “Be willing to cannibalize your user base” doesn’t mean “force new things on your user base”!
