I have theorized that perhaps one of the best ways to reduce this kind of thing is to require that all data gathered on everyone be made publicly available for anyone to freely search from a single centralized location/portal. With the data pulled up having the source it was gathered from, and possibly an email sent to whatever gathered email is included when new data is added to the portal. But I too would very much like a way to search for myself to see what they have collected.
