> Via this reading of human history, the authors seem to be arguing that our trajectory as a technological species capable of high energy use and large-scale agriculture is a mistake that has taken us to a place we never should have been, and has doomed us
That's a nihilistic, pessimistic, and Machiavellian reading on history. It's also quite hypocritical, writing about this presumably on a computer, and then publishing it on the Internet. Everyone alive today might not exist if it weren't for all of these technological breakthroughs. It's quite the irony to advocate for mass decrease in population and think you are coming up with a "solution". Instead we should continue technological growth, which like many times before, has shattered our expectations of what is possible.
