‘We’re going to pay in a big way’: a shocking new book on the climate crisis
- 0xedd 4y agoAnyone who blames "white patriarchy" for today's problems (which are usually woke delusions) is an idiot. This guy's among them.
- ZeroGravitas 4y agoI think they're just trolling. Last time they were in the news they were protesting a lithium mine on native american lands. Which is fair enough, but then the native american's found out they'd been saying provocative anti-trans stuff on twitter and basically bringing their cause into disrepute. Felt like it might have been a fossil fuel funded stunt, but possibly they're just idiots or attention seekers. edit: no I'm mixed up. This is a seperate pair of environmental protesters who say we're all doomed and civilization is ending, and renewables are useless, describe themselves as radical feminists and are also anti-trans. Is this a thing now? > "Jensen identifies as a radical Christian who rejects the supernatural claims of Christian orthodoxy" Still feels like trolling, but he's been at it for a while so who knows anymore. Tho other pair of doom-mongers were these guys: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/06/nevada-transgender-rights-environmentalists-lithium-00001658 https://www.politico.com/news/2022/02/06/nevada-transgender-...
- mikestew 4y agoI'm at a loss find where "white patriarchy" is blamed for anything in that article. "White" turns up one match that has nothing to do with finding blame for today's problems, and "patriarch*" turns up nothing. There is mention that population control has traditionally been associated with white supremacy, but it would be a stretch, IMO, to turn that to blame for "today's problems".
- Comevius 4y agoThe authors indeed only mention white supremacy in the context of how population control is associated with it historically.
- proc0 4y ago> Via this reading of human history, the authors seem to be arguing that our trajectory as a technological species capable of high energy use and large-scale agriculture is a mistake that has taken us to a place we never should have been, and has doomed us That's a nihilistic, pessimistic, and Machiavellian reading on history. It's also quite hypocritical, writing about this presumably on a computer, and then publishing it on the Internet. Everyone alive today might not exist if it weren't for all of these technological breakthroughs. It's quite the irony to advocate for mass decrease in population and think you are coming up with a "solution". Instead we should continue technological growth, which like many times before, has shattered our expectations of what is possible.

- hedora 4y agoWow. I recently read H.G. Well's "The World Set Free", which covers similar issues, but is about 100 years ahead of the book on every topic mentioned in the review (including gender identity). That's particularly impressive, since the "The World Set Free" was written in 1913.
- Comevius 4y agoUnfortunately we are bad at recognizing threats, it triggers our psychological defenses. Society itself is a big psychological shield, and within it you are incentivized to attain personal success at any cost. Through this and the diffusion of responsibility nobody is really responsible for any damage. The damage is not counted at all, it's someone else's problem, it's the future's problem. Unfortunately we are already in the future. The bill is coming. We shouldn't base our global economy on a popularity contest on top of the supply chain, where the supply chain is expected to continuously grow with the population, without considering the biosphere on which the supply chain rests.
