Actually it should be USB4 Gen4x2, because the lane speed is 40 Gbit/s and there are two lanes, but the specification was also updated significantly, which makes USB4 Gen2 and Gen3 USB4 Version 1.0, and the ones after it USB4 Version 2.0.
The good news is that it is backward compatible with USB4 Version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3.
- colejohnson66 4y agoUSB 3.2 is also backwards compatible with USB 3.1 and USB 3.0 because they're all the same damn thing just with different names. When they added 10 Gb/s, they renamed 3.0 to 3.1 Gen 1 and made 10 Gb/s 3.1 Gen 2 because... why not? Then 20 Gb/s renamed 5 Gb/s to 3.2 Gen 1, 10 Gb/s to 3.2 Gen 2, and named the new one 3.2 Gen 2x2. What is wrong with the USB consortium?
- Comevius 4y agoTo be fair the marketing names are simpler, like USB4 20Gbps. This one will be likely called USB4 80Gbps.
