Ask HN: How is “How to Design Programs” (HtDP) as a first entry to programming?

HtDP teaches mainly functional programming. But the real world still uses imperative programming majorly. Those who used HtDP as a first resource to get into programming what did they use to learn imperative programming and then other subjects of CS like data structures and algorithms? Or is it better to use HtDP after you have already programmed using bad style in an imperative language?
