Except:
1. In Roman numerals M is thousand but MM is two thousand (e.g. MMXXII)
2. In scientific notation M is million (e.g. 1 MW)
The usage of MM to represent 1 million is done by people who didn't understand Roman numerals originally.
- jofer 4y agoIt's not logical, but it is a standard on the finance and business side of things. MM is universally "million" there, be it dollars, liters, barrels, etc.
- scblock 4y agoAh yes, all those thousands of engineers over the decades who are "using roman numerals wrong", rather than using a well understood system of prefixes that is just not SI.
- kube-system 4y agoIt is not a misuse of Roman numerals. It is an abbreviation of the Latin “Mille Mille”.
- fortran77 4y agoHow dare you accuse me of not understanding Roman numerals. MM is a standard accounting abbreviation for “million”. See, for example https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/knowledge/other/mm-millions/ https://corporatefinanceinstitute.com/resources/knowledge/ot... Obviously, you’ve never looked at a financial statement of any sort.
