- powerapple 4y agoWhy did US break "official" relationship with Taiwan? They must agreed with China for that. Now I can see it does not agree with China.
- DiogenesKynikos 4y agoThe US used to agree with Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan, back when the US recognized the Republic of China as the government of China. The US switched its recognition of who represents China from the ROC to the People's Republic of China. Unless the US has now decided that China's sovereign territory has changed, that implies recognition of Taiwan as part of the PRC. This is also the reason why the US simultaneously dropped official recognition of the ROC when it recognized the PRC, as another commenter has pointed out. However, for decades, the US has preferred to leave this implication unstated, partly so that it can continue to deal unofficially with the ROC. The recent moves by the US towards actively denying Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan are much more serious than most Americans realize, and could have major consequences. For Americans, Taiwan is just an island across the ocean that they've heard about on the news. On the other hand, hundreds of millions of people in China deeply care about sovereignty over Taiwan. That's a recipe for sleepwalking into a conflict.
- Bakary 4y agoIf hundreds of millions care about it, it would make more sense for the government to keep it as a focal point for the population during economic crises instead of actually invading it.
- DiogenesKynikos 4y agoIf the US takes steps to formally recognize Taiwan, it will be politically impossible for the Chinese government not to react extremely forcefully.
- Bakary 4y agoI agree. I just think it's a missed opportunity for the government to keep the status quo indefinitely.
