That’s exactly what it is. Chips is one of the few advantages the US has left over China. It would be foolish to help them, we are in the early stages of the second cold war.
- adrian_b 4y agoMore correctly, having Taiwan as an ally is one of the few advantages that US has left over China. China has already designed datacenter CPUs (Biren) and server CPUs (Alibaba Yitian 710) that are as good as those designed in USA and even better in some respects. So in chip design, USA and China have very similar capabilities. However both countries are completely dependent for now on the chip manufacturing made in Taiwan. The difference is that USA can forbid Taiwan to export products to China, like it was done for Huawei, while China cannot forbid Taiwan to export products to USA (except for a successful invasion). USA needs to improve its domestic chip manufacturing capabilities if it wants to have a real advantage over China, and the large amount of money allocated through the CHIPS Act should help this, even if there is a large risk that much of the money will not be spent wisely.
