Nvidia Explains Why It Believes USD Is the “HTML of the Metaverse”
- kensai 4y ago“Much like HTML forms a description of a webpage—which can be hosted anywhere on the internet—and is retrieved and rendered locally by a web browser, USD is a protocol for describing complex virtual scenes which can be retrieved and rendered to varying degrees depending upon local hardware capabilities. With a ‘USD browser’ of sorts, Nvidia is suggesting that USD could be the common method by which virtual spaces are defined in a way that’s easy for anyone to decipher and render.“ Interesting approach, but I think a good XR experience is much more “declaration” of a scene, interactions will be important. I suspect the end result will need this USD with some kind of semantic graph to process relations.

USD has some major pain-points, the most important one being that unlike HTML, it has absolutely no specification for the file format. Everyone using it would have to go through the single USD library.
