I would suggest joining even smaller than 40 if you can, although that’s not bad. I had joined a 250 person startup before founding my first company and I can say confidently I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and I think the experience would have helped. Either way you’re going to be figuring out a lot of stuff on your own, but I think I would have recognised that earlier and would have had a little more practice.
