Apple applies for AR headset name trademarks ahead of launch
- birdyrooster 4y agoHow will they avoid the “glasshole” effect? Would Google glass have gotten the ridicule it did as a token of wealth if it was more useful?
- isitmadeofglass 4y agoGoogle would have fared better if only it waited a slight bit. Back then the general attitude was “why would you want to film everything you see!?!” Now the attitude is going to be “Awesome this make my tiktok/reals/instagramming much easier!!” And just like the early adopters of blackberries where seen as geeks and corporate stiffs while iPhone adopters where “on the edge influencers”, we’ll see the same playlist with AR and Google va Apple, because Apple cares more about user perception than tech, and Google cares more about tech than user perception.
- edmundsauto 4y agoMeta’s sunglasses partnership with Rayban is actually pretty neat looking. A relative traveled through Europe with them recently and said they were awesome for recording short memories without creating a 4th wall.
- aaaaaaaaata 4y agoHow different are they to Snap/Ray-Ban "Stories" glasses?
- xsmasher 4y agoI don't know if they're accurate, but none of the prototypes look like something you would walk around on the street wearing. Like the Oculus Rift, they look like something you'd use in your home or office. If they DO wind up looking more like regular glasses, I expect there will be no ability to take pictures or record video from the front-facing camera. It could be locked down to only be usable by the os for overlays, etc, and probably subtle enough that you don't feel like it is filming you. I think the "glasshole effect" was more from the feeling that someone was sticking a camera in your face at the bar, in the park, etc. High-end smartphone are a token of wealth but generally not subject to ridicule, until you bring them up and point the camera at someone. Then it's "get that camera out of my face!" time. Ditto for the apple watch - it's not offensive in social situations because (1) it doesn't have a camera and (2) it's obvious when someone is using it and not paying attention to you.
