Are there other places where power generation is going to be a constraint in the future? Any chance us-east-1 won’t have enough juice for all the data centers?
- toast0 4y agoThe island of Ireland has its own grid, with limited interconnection to the UK grid. us-east-1 is within a much larger grid (the eastern interconnection) which also has more robust interconnection with other major grids. There's a lot more flexibility in connecting new large customers in a larger grid, because there's a tendancy to build towards a percentage over capacity, and a 1MW load is a smaller percent of a larger grid. That said, a 1MW load is still a lot, so the local transmission utility may not always be able to accomodate it in any particular location, but it should be possible to find somewhere nearby-ish where there's capacity.
- 22c 4y agoAFAIK the biggest constraints for virtually all DCs is available power and available fibre connectivity (or in the case of places like Singapore, available land).
- Rastonbury 4y agoSingapore's moratorium was ostensibly due to environmental concerns
- 22c 4y agoPresumably there would've been fewer environmental concerns if Singapore simply had more land.
- dopylitty 4y agoThere was an article[0] recently about just that thing. In this case the issue is overhead line capacity in the area by us-east-1 rather than generator capacity. 0: https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/dominion-energy-admits-it-cant-meet-data-center-power-demands-in-virginia/ https://www.datacenterdynamics.com/en/news/dominion-energy-a...
