Shocking that 55% of inmates are in for violent crimes such as murder, rape, and manslaughter.

- ok_dad 4y agoSource, please, that just seems incorrect. That would mean for 2mm prisoners there would be 1.1mm murderers, rapists, and manslaughterers. That seems like way too large a number to be realistic with the declining rate of murder, rape, and manslaughter.
- selectodude 4y agoThere are literally hundreds of crimes that are neither drug possession or “murder, rape, and manslaughter.”
- dotancohen 4y agoPresumably murder, rape, and manslaughter carry longer sentence terms. If a rapist spends five times as long in prison compared to a drug offense, then there will be five times as many rapists behind bars if the quantity of the two crime's convictions are comparable.
- missedthecue 4y agohttps://felonvoting.procon.org/incarcerated-felon-population-by-type-of-crime-committed/ https://felonvoting.procon.org/incarcerated-felon-population... I got it wrong. It's actually only 3.7% in for drug possession, not 4.5%.

- rahimnathwani 4y agoThose stats are based on a tiny fraction of the US prison population. From elsewhere on that site, that agency is responsible for "158,012 Inmates".
- consp 4y agoOnly statistic which I could find on short notice (literally first google result ...) but considering it's federal, I trust a small sample size more than random numbers from someone on the internet without quotation, especially if they are off by an order of magnitude from other countries. The clue is: It looks like the numbers are reversed which would make a lot more sense.
- kofejnik 4y agoselection bias: federal crimes are a specific subset, so federal inmates are not a representative sample
- kofejnik 4y agoaccording to [0], out of 1.04M in state prisons it's: - 606k violent - 142k drug - 159k property - 124k public order (which includes 42k weapons and 18k DUI) https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/pie2022.html https://www.prisonpolicy.org/reports/pie2022.html
