The article focuses too much on bashing Google when Apple is the real villain. Apple blatantly lies by saying they allow alternative browsers on their platform - they do not - because they force everyone to use their WebKit browser engine, ie core functionality is defined by them so any differences are mostly trivial and cosmetic AND of-course they are slow to adopt JavaScript or CSS features that would threaten Native Apps.
- i67vw3 4y ago> An Apple spokeswoman said WebKit is important to protecting privacy and security, as well as promoting efficiency and performance. She said users can easily change their default browser on the company’s devices. Completely bogus statement from apple spokeperson. Personally, I prefer google over apple (degoogled google). Google gives you absolute freedom while apple does not. This freedom can be used to have more private experience than apple.
- gardenfelder 4y ago>Apple blatantly lies by saying they allow alternative browsers on their platform - they do not - What? I'm having problems interpreting that; I'm typing this in Firefox on a MacbookPro; I installed Brave on an Ipad. What, precisely are you saying?
- smoldesu 4y agoIt's all the same browser. Apple won't let other developers implement their own rendering engine, which gives them unimpeachable control over what apps work natively and which are incompatible with their browser. It's holding the industry back, and Apple is doing it because doing anything else would threaten their margins.
- s__s 4y agoThey allow alternative browser engines on macOS but not on iOS. Brave on iPad is just a wrapper around WebKit. (Same with Firefox, Chrome, etc)
