No.
Most European countries announced that they were going to completely stop importing Russian oil & gas within the next couple of years.
They also froze Russian overseas bank accounts and blocked Russian access to the Swift international payments processing system.
As a consequence of this Russia said "Well, if you're blocking our access to foreign currency, you'll have to pay for your oil & gas in Roubles"
Western European nations refused to pay in Roubles, so Russia said "If you won't pay, you don't get the oil & gas'*
Honestly. Whatever your opinion on Russia's invasion of Ukraine [and I think we're all pretty much of one voice on that!], spinning the narrative as 'Russia invaded Ukraine and then gratuitously turned off Europe's oil & gas supplies' is doublethink worthy of Orwell.
I've just heard Boris Johnson on the BBC News giving a ridiculous "The British people will show Putin he can't bully us by raising gas prices..."* speech, in response to questions about the crippling energy price rices we've had already and are having again in October.
None of these price rises would have happened if European leaders had thought for a nanosecond about the consequences, before falling over themselves in their headlong rush to slap these self-harming sanctions on Russia.
Total and utter fucking idiots. And, as one of the 'normal' 'man-in-the-street' people who's going to be financially crippled by this, I find the blatantly transparent co-ordinated effort to re-write history and pretend it was all evil Russia's fault all along, to be doubly insulting.
