$320k in hosting a month for ~8m monthly visits
- x86_64Ubuntu 4y agoI've always found scaling interesting. Mostly because I've never implemented such a system. The scaling issue also seemed to affect Parler too where their computational needs were far out of wack compared to their MUA.
- qmarchi 4y ago8M visits a month end up being 3 visits/second on average. Not bad, but also $320k for 3vps is awful.
- dqpb 4y ago> 3 visit/second This reminds me of an excellent book on queueing theory for software engineers: Performance Modeling and Design of Computer Systems: Queueing Theory In Action by Mor Harchol-Balter
- MuffinFlavored 4y agoLet's take this argument one step further. What do you think is the cheapest way you could serve 3 visits/second? Obviously a $5 VPS could do "Hello, world!" or some light JSON at 3 visits per second, right? What are they serving? Streaming video? Megabytes of scripts/styles/fonts/images? Ah, it's for Truth social. aka 1 visit is most likely not 1 request. It's most like... 10-15, with logic to generate a timeline, plus authorization checks, plus database, plus cache
- claudiulodro 4y agoThe cheapest way would likely be something like a WordPress.com or Tumblr site, where you can piggyback on someone's global-scale infrastructure. You could do that for like the $10/yr it costs to map a domain, but it's obviously somewhat restrictive.
- rad_gruchalski 4y agoCloudflare workers.
- fragmede 4y agoOh that explains it. Who cares how much it costs if you're not going to pay the bill? https://www.mediaite.com/trump/fox-reports-trumps-truth-social-faces-big-money-woes-owes-web-host-1-6-million-in-outstanding-payments/ https://www.mediaite.com/trump/fox-reports-trumps-truth-soci...
- toast0 4y agoMaybe they overbought, thinking they would have usage? Then, when they got only 8m visits in a month, they stopped paying on the contract.
- rvz 4y agoSo the source is a 'screenshot' posted by Tech Dirt about an undesirable Trump-related entity and it is immediately true and anything else such as (privacy, surveillance, free-software, big tech, etc) is speculative nonsense? I thought Tech Dirt was a rumour mill and an 'unreputable' source here and in general. So now this time it is reputable?
- powerhour 4y agoMainstream GOP darling Fox is also reporting this story, FWIW.
- rpdillon 4y agoI've read TD for years and always thought that they were quite reputable. They (and Masnick in particular) have better legal analysis of IP cases than I've found almost anywhere else. Of course, it's a very opinionated site, but I don't recall ever seeing 'nonsense' on the site. Maybe I'm missing it?

- jbverschoor 4y agoJust buy more compute! It's easy! We don't need 10, 100x, whatever people when we have "the cloud"
- Kukumber 4y agoWhat to say other than being rude The industry attracts people interested in the money they can make, they fake their knowledge and capabilities, and they don't understand what they are doing, because they don't care about the tech, they are here for the juicy pay That's why our society needs to get rid of money and wealth asap, otherwise we'll be stuck on this dying planet eating each other's remains
- lagrange77 4y agoYou speak from my heart
- t6jvcereio 4y agoThe same way that you have contempt for people who "don't care about the tech", a lot more people, me included, have contempt for those who "only care the tech". This is because "the tech" is just a tool. To me what matters is what problem you're solving. What you're saying effectively is that your don't care about solving problems, you just like playing with the tools you're familiar with. Fortunately people like me are winning (in the sense that we're being able to shape society a lot more effectively than those who want to "get rid of money")
- lagrange77 4y agoUnfortunately 'solving problems' often really means accumulating easy money. Every strategy is acceptable, like faking and manipulating. In our current (primitive) system, this way of life may lead to what's called success in this system. I deeply doubt, that it can lead to a fulfilling life, which you may realize only when it's too late. I have witnessed this late realization multiple times and it's tragic.
- toomuchtodo 4y agoHow do you build systems to solve problems while creating guardrails against unjust enrichment? Success should be rewarded, but not too much, and both what is success and how much rewarding is what’s up for debate.
