Does she live, or spend time, or conduct business in California? Then she should get some input in what laws are proposed. She's not a dictator, it is just a bill being put up for discussion.
- OJFord 4y agoSounds like it, 'with deep connections to Hollywood' is among the quotes OP admits as though it makes it worse somehow. Used to direct films, so presumably at least lived (if not lives) there. The 'British Baroness' phrasing seems like they just thought it was better clickbait than 'a company' - surely the actual issue the article has, by the end, is just this process that allows companies to draft Californian law; not that in this case the company happened recently to hire a British baroness...
- qwerty456127 4y agoTo me it seems like 'British Baroness' attracts attention because it sounds like a person completely foreign to both California and to ordinary people, probably having little idea of the real life there and given authority solely because of her family ancestry.
- OJFord 4y agoExactly, that's what I mean by being better clickbait. But it's just not the case at all, and the author doesn't even really take issue with that, that's just who happens to be behind the company.
- gumby 4y ago> 'with deep connections to Hollywood' is among the quotes OP admits as though it makes it worse somehow. Well frankly it does. As the article says, "with close ties to Hollywood (any time there’s an internet destructive law happening, if you scratch hard enough, you’ll find Hollywood somehow connected)." And if you read techdirt with any regularity you'll find Hollywood is indeed almost always involved in some anti-internet efforts.
- OJFord 4y agoYeah fair enough, but again that's separate to 'British baroness' right, it's not 'how dare a British baroness have ties to Hollywood', it's 'weird this company drafting law' and 'oh of course, Hollywood at it again'.
