It's nice that we have a thing called the Uniform Resource Locator, which brings us, in the blink of an eye, to the islands of value in the oceans of goo.
- foobarbecue 4y agoYes. And very sad that most people don't know what that is, because the goo companies are doing their best to hide it.
- SketchySeaBeast 4y agoHow are people supposed to find sites they like without those goo companies? Yes, yes, DDG, but it'll either live long enough to become a goo company or die in (relative) obscurity.
- teekert 4y agoFor example, HN is a nice island where some nice URLs gather, allowing me to hop to other islands of value.
- SketchySeaBeast 4y agoBut how did we get here? And it's really only for one type of information. If we want the weather do we type out "weather.com" and hope that that site is related to our desires?
- teekert 4y agoI got here because a fellow nerd told me about how the great Linus himself used to roam this particular island.
- foobarbecue 4y agoWord of mouth, in my case. HN doesn't seem to come up often, if ever, in my google searches. I'm not arguing against search engines. I'm arguing against search engines that obfuscate URLs, and browsers that do the same. Against AMP. And social media sites that make it easy to "share" stuff but hard to get a URL to said stuff. But actually, yeah, I do often go to foo.com if I'm interested in foo, just to see. And usually, it's a cash parking page.

- foobarbecue 4y agoI'm 100% confident that there is a 0% chance.
- wruza 4y agoThere is a short hexadecimal string out there that makes me a billionaire in the blink of an eye, but I have yet to find it.
- harimau777 4y agoHow do people find those islands in the first place so that they can use their URL?
- teekert 4y agoAre you truly dependent on a search engine for any new discovery on the internet?
