Youtube definitely holds content back in a strategic way. After I go down the rabbit hole on a channel, and watch all the recommended videos in order (there's always one video from the same channel in recommended), I've seen most of the good videos that channel has to offer. But, some fraction of the deep dive content is held back and drip-fed over a period of months/years. It's incredibly habit-forming. Pretty sure the algorithm also shows better stuff to people who are returning from a break. Our brains pay more attention to the beginning/end of experiences, and are fine with dreck in the middle.
