From a central European point: Many people I know are in relationships where both partners work, good jobs in e.g. engineering, and still cannot afford housing (other than a shoebox) where they live. Also, more educated people usually cannot find work in every random village, requiring a daily commute of both partners (before WFH). So many people I know just ask themselves why they should hustle if they cannot live in their own place anyway. They just see things differently and enjoy themselves.
