Why are cans shaped the way they are? (ie, not cubes) [2014]
- freeqaz 4y agoPrevious Discussion on HN from 2014: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8097125 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=8097125 This post comes to my mind every time I'm at the grocery store. Global economics are weird and this post makes it all make sense to me. I happened to read this about a ~year ago and I _thought_ it was from HN, but apparently it wasn't. I have no idea where I found it, but I was able to find it via some clever searching around. Anyway, does anybody have any other articles to share that you felt gave you an "ahah!" moment in every day life?
- aurizon 4y agoEver notice the small bulge top and bottom on cans, with the concentric ribs? At cook time they allow a little more bulge. The round can see only what they calle 'hoop stress' = tension only. Cubes would bulge more and fit in boxes better though... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_stress https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cylinder_stress
